"To have and to hold from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish til death do us part."

- Book of Common Prayer

Getting married in Barbados is easy; there is no waiting period or minimum length of stay. In order to get the ball rolling the first step would be to place an application for a marriage license. Requests must be made in person by both the bride and groom at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Don’t forget to travel with the following documents, since they are a critical requirement of the application process:-

  1. Valid Passport or original birth certificate for both parties (Certified copies of the birth certificates are also accepted)
  2. If either party was divorced, an original Decree Absolute or a certified copy of The Final Judgement
  3. If either party was previously married and widowed, a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse.
  4. Where necessary, all documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation

For those couples who wish to be married in a church, a written confirmation is required from your priest verifying that you are both practicing Christians and have participated in necessary pre-marital counselling.

Traditional Roman Catholics requesting a church wedding will have to undertake the following along with securing a marriage license:-

  1. An interview by your Parish Priest in your home Diocese. The parish priest then undertakes the necessary investigations, obtains a dispensation if required and provides information about participation in a pre-marriage preparation programme.
  2. The relevant paperwork is then forwarded to the Diocesan Chancery, who in turn sends them well in advance to the Diocesan office in Barbados.
  3. Marriages may not be celebrated on Holy Saturday or outside of a church.

A magistrate can also consecrate the ceremony for those couples who do not wish to be married by a priest. For couples of Jewish, Hindu, Muslim/Islamic or Buddhist faiths you will need to arrange for your Rabbi, Pandit, Imam or Buddhist teacher to be to sanctify the wedding as there are none currently registered on the island.
